The Chamber of Commerce requests the inclusion of nuclear energy and state-of-the-art technologies in the energy auction process.

September 8, 2025, San Juan, Puerto RicoThe Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce (PRCC) announced today that it sent a letter to the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (NEPR) and the Puerto Rico Public-Private Partnerships Authority (P3A) requesting the express inclusion of nuclear energy and other state-of-the-art technologies in the auction processes to acquire 3,000 megawatts (MW) of new generation.

In the letter, the PRTC emphasized that broadening the spectrum of energy options will allow for a more competitive, inclusive and reliable auction process, while promoting a more diverse and objective evaluation of proposals based on cost, safety, reliability, environmental impact and technical feasibility criteria.

“Puerto Rico faces a critical moment in its energy transformation. We cannot limit our options when there are technologies that can effectively complement current sources. Our call is for the procurement process to be broad, transparent, and open to all alternatives that can provide real solutions to the energy crisis,” said the Margaret Ramírez Báez, President of the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce .

The entity reiterated that its request is aligned with the federal energy policy promoted by the U.S. Department of Energy, as well as with Resolution IEPR-MI-2025-001 issued by the NEPR. In addition, it stressed that both the Puerto Rico House of Representatives and Senate have supported the evaluation of these technologies through research resolutions.

“Puerto Rico’s competitiveness and economic development depend on exploring all available energy alternatives. The Chamber of Commerce is committed to contributing to this discussion and actively collaborating in the search for solutions that guarantee a modern, reliable and sustainable electricity system,” added Ramírez Báez.
