The Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce Endorses the Appointment of the Committee for Puerto Rico’s Energy Transformation

Chamber Leaders Approve This Immediate and Proactive Initiative to Address the Island’s Electric System Crisis

San Juan, Puerto Rico, December 16, 2024— The Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce (PRCC), through its president and spokesperson, Attorney Luis Pizarro Otero, endorsed the efforts of Governor-Elect Hon. Jenniffer González Colón today regarding the important announcement of the creation of the Working Committee for Puerto Rico’s Energy Transformation, a critical measure to urgently address the island’s energy infrastructure. The Chamber leader applauded this initiative and offered the incoming government the expertise of PRCC professionals and members to collaborate with the Committee as needed.

“The continued fragility of the electric system has been a significant obstacle to economic development, the quality of life of Puerto Ricans, and the competitiveness of businesses on the island. The appointment of a multisectoral committee demonstrates the Governor-Elect’s commitment to collaboration and the pursuit of concrete solutions to Puerto Rico’s energy challenges. It is vital for all sectors to work together to build a robust, efficient, and diversified electric system that drives economic growth and ensures stable and affordable service for everyone,” said Attorney Pizarro Otero.

The announced Committee, composed of representatives from both the private and public sectors, is tasked with advising the Governor-Elect on key aspects such as a comprehensive evaluation of the performance of actors within the energy system, the acceleration of electric generation projects, the diversification of energy sources, and the effective use of federal funds allocated for the system’s reconstruction. Additionally, the group will focus on addressing the restructuring of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority’s (PREPA) debt, among other priority challenges.

“From the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce, we reiterate our commitment to actively collaborate with the government and this committee in the efforts to transform the island’s energy system. We are confident that, with an inclusive and multisectoral approach, Puerto Rico can achieve an energy infrastructure that serves as the engine for the economic and social development we all deserve,” concluded Pizarro Otero.
