Chamber of Commerce and Department of Education Join Forces to Integrate Financial Education into Public Schools
A collaboration agreement has been formalized to develop a financial education curriculum that equips students with the skills needed for their future.
San Juan, Puerto Rico — September 26, 2025 — The President of the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce, Attorney Margaret Ramírez Báez, and the Secretary of the Puerto Rico Department of Education, Eliezer Ramos Parés, held a meeting to discuss initiatives aimed at strengthening the Island’s educational system. The proposals focus on two strategic areas: introducing financial education starting in elementary grades, and creating professional career pathways aligned with the local job market.
“The goal of these initiatives is to connect education with employment, promote youth talent retention on the Island, and support Puerto Rico’s sustainable economic development,” stated Ramírez Báez.
Financial Education as a Foundational Pillar from K-12
The first proposal seeks to design and implement a mandatory, progressive, and contextualized financial education curriculum for all levels of the K-12 system. This curriculum will ensure that students acquire the knowledge needed to make informed financial decisions, fostering savings habits, responsible investment, and an entrepreneurial mindset from an early age.
As part of this initiative, the launch of a pilot project is being considered for the 2026-2027 academic year in collaboration with selected public schools. The pilot would include technical and academic support from private-sector experts, as well as training programs for educators.
Career Pathways to Bridge School and the Workforce
The second initiative proposes the creation of clear educational and vocational pathways focused on Puerto Rico’s fastest-growing and most in-demand sectors, such as bioscience, technology, renewable energy, and the aerospace industry. This strategy seeks to provide every high school student with a concrete vision of their professional future and the tools to achieve it, by integrating technical certifications, hands-on experiences, and internships directly into the school curriculum.
Commitment to the Future of Puerto Rican Youth
The meeting concluded with an agreement to explore avenues of collaboration between the Department of Education and the Chamber of Commerce, including joint working groups to advance curriculum design and implementation of both initiatives.
“Today, in this meeting, we reaffirmed our commitment to an education that empowers our youth and prepares them for a future filled with real opportunities here in Puerto Rico. We are excited about the Department of Education’s openness and willingness to collaborate on initiatives that can have a transformative impact on the lives of thousands of students,” affirmed Ramírez Báez.
